An SSL Certificate is a digitally signed certificate that establishes the identity of a website and uses encryption for the exchange of data between the website and the user's web browser. The certificate is issued by a trusted authority known as a Certificate Authority (CA) and typically contains information like the Owner's name, Name of issuer, the certificate holder's public key and an expiration date.
SSL Certificates are generally used when a website wants to accept sensitive information like passwords, credit card details, etc.
You can view a website's SSL Certificate by clicking on the lock icon in the address bar of a browser.
Types of SSL Certificates
SSL certificates are classified by validation level and by number of secured domains or addresses:
SSL certificates types by validation level
SSL certificates types by number of secured domains
Domain Validation SSL
Domain Validated (DV) SSL certificate is the most basic type of SSL certificates and the fastest to install. Certificate Authority (CA) issuing the certificate only requires verification that the applicant is the owner of the domain name to secure. Verification is typically completed within few minutes.
These certificates offer little level of trust to users, so they are best suited for websites where sensitive information such as usernames, passwords or credit card information is not required.
A free DV SSL certificate is offered with all of our Linux and Windows shared hosting plans.
Organization Validation SSL
An organization-validated SSL certificate (OV) requires the certification authority (CA) to perform a light verification process of the organization (company, administration, etc.) that owns the website.
This type of certificate is a good compromise between DV and EV certificates, as they are not as expensive as EV certificates but still offer more confidence than DV certificates.
Extended Validation SSL (EV)
The Extended Validation (EV) SSL Certificate represents security reference SSL. They are used by the most trusted sites in the world such as Google, Twitter, Paypal, etc. Before the EV SSL certificate is issued, the Certificate Authority (CA) performs a thorough verification process of the company.
EV certificates are recommended for e-commerce, banking and websites that process sensitive information (usernames, passwords, personnal data, etc.).
Unique SSL
These certificates are used to secure a single domain name without any subdomain. The www are usually covered if the SSL certificate is issued for a second level domain name.(ie: heberjahiz.com).
Wildcard SSL
Wildcard SSL certificates are used to secure a domain name and all its subdomains (ie: support.heberjahiz.com, control.heberjahiz.com, etc.) with a single certificate. The number of subdomains is not limited.
Multi-Domain SSL
Multi-Domain or SAN (Secure Alternate Name) SSL certificates secure multiple domain names with a single certificate (ie: heberjahiz.com, arcanes.ma, etc.).
Multi-Domain Wildcard SSL
Multi-Domain Wildcard SSL combine the advantages of Multi-Domain SSL certificates and Wildcard SSL certificates. More clearly, the Multi-Domain Wildcard SSL certificates secure multiple domain names and all their subdomains (unlimited) with a single certificate.
